What is Open Pattern Format?
Open Pattern Format, or OPAF for short, is a digital file format specification designed for yarn craft patterns and projects. It is to knitting (or crochet) what the e-book is to reading. OPAF patterns can be distributed, bought and downloaded just like a PDF pattern and read by any app which supports the format.
OPAF files are simply a carrier of pattern information including metadata, images, charts and instructions. OPAF files have the ability to store dynamic information making it possible to create truly customisable patterns. Designers can give their customers the option to customise things like gauge, body measurements or shaping to create a bespoke project.
Unlike a PDF, OPAF patterns are not pre-formatted. Layout can be adapted by the reader application based on your preferences and the device it is running on. Regardless of whether you prefer to read a pattern and track progress on a phone, tablet, laptop or paper OPAF has you covered.
How does OPAF work?
Designers create their patterns. This can either be done in a text editor using plain XML or using the Pattern Creator Tool.
The completed pattern gets ‘packaged’ creating an OPAF package file (.opafpkg). This OPAF package file can be distributed to customers just like a PDF.
The OPAF Package file (.opafpkg) can be read by any apps that support the format such as Pattern Manager. From here you can configure your project(s).
Pick a size, add custom gauge information, select any options given by the designer that may be relevant to you (choose whether to see optional bust adjustment instructions, for example).
Once you have configured your project, an OPAF project (.opafproj) file is created. This file holds all of the information specific to the project and enables progress to be tracked. This project file can either be read and displayed by the same app or exported and loaded into another. You can even export the project as a PDF and print. The choice is yours!
Pattern Manager App
Pattern Manager is our reference app for reading and managing OPAF patterns. With Pattern Manager, reading patterns is fully interactive. Click on an abbreviation to view the full description. Load interactive charts for relevant instructions. Follow links to videos or tutorials recommended by the designer and much more.
Pattern Creator Tool
The Pattern Creator Tool helps designers to create OPAF pattern files.
